Experience

I am bilingual in Chinese (Mandarin) I worked for UCSB's CLAS (Campus Learning Assistance Services) as an ACE Tutor/Writing Lab Drop-in Tutor. I tutored university students of all ages, including graduate students. In the ACE program, worked with first-year EOP (Educational Opportunities Program) students to encourage them in their writing and develop their own voices within their composition. Also, I provided additional peer support during the revision process and helped students to focus on the importance of organization and structure within an essay. When I was placed in the ACE program my first year of work, and I challenged first-year EOP (Educational Opportunities Program) students to develop their own voices within their composition. As a drop-in writing tutor, I provided constructive peer support during the revision process, drawing the students' attentions to the importance of structure and organization over grammar. During high school I tutored two of my friends in the SAT, and they ended up scoring 2000 or higher on it (back when it was out of 2400) - more than 300 points of increase from the first test I had them take. This experience showed me that I had the capacity to be a really effective tutor, and it was motivating to me to see how my work was able to positively affect other people. I began to tutor at the University of Santa Barbara out of a desire to help people conquer the beast of "writing essays" because, in actuality, it is a great place to express your thoughts to the world through the classroom environment. I believe strongly in the extra-curricular benefits of writing, and so I would love to spread that interest and point of view to as many people as I can. A relevant class I've taken to be a better tutor at UCSB was Writing 160, which was an upper-division course that taught me theory on tutoring and the relationship between the tutor and the tutee to produce the most encouraging and productive tutoring session. I've also written for the school newspaper for a year and half at UCSB, and I've maintained a blog for creative writing purposes for a few years now. I've managed to publish a few articles in the newspaper, and it opened a new world and style of writing compared to what I normally did on my blog. My philosophy on writing and improving writing is that it's a process. I can't stress that enough. Writing goes beyond just having correct grammar and the ability to utilize an exhaustive vocabulary; it is a way of solidifying your thoughts as a small contribution to the world of education and, perhaps, the world at large. I am willing to invest the amount of time needed to polishing developing writers and students so that they come away with more than just a corrected essay or some more grammar knowledge; I am seeking to help them hear their own voice in their writing and bring that with them to the next step in their careers.
